What is one thing you can do every single day to increase your happiness? The answer is deceptively simple – GRATITUDE.
You’ve probably heard it before…it’s super important to keep a gratitude journal! It will have a profound effect on your life!
Being grateful, REALLY FEELING grateful for things in your life will drastically affect your outlook on life.
In fact it has been scientifically proven that focusing on the positive can measurably affect your happiness.
Studies have shown that keeping a daily gratitude journal can have a positive impact on a number of areas in your life; improved sleep, a better sense of well-being, a greater ability to handle change, and has even been shown to reduce physical pain.
Okay, so you now know the importance of keeping a gratitude journal but what about those times when you feel like you have nothing to be thankful for?
Finding Gratitude
The things you write down in your gratitude journal don’t have to be big or fancy. All too often it’s the little things that we wouldn’t want to live without that can boost our mood and make us smile.
- A warm, cozy bed
- A delicious cup of coffee
- A tender hug from a child
- A loving kiss from your significant other
- A purring cat rubbing up against your legs
- The sun shining through the window on a cold day
You get the idea ? Here’s the real beauty of doing this ritual on a daily basis; your mind will begin to automatically search for, notice, and find things to be thankful for.
Another obstacle that may stand in the way of you keeping a journal is “not enough time.” I get it, trust me, I do! And I have a solution for you!
The Five Minute Journal!
It’s literally just as the name says; only 5 minutes a day!
It’s a journal used by the big guns, Tim Ferris and Pat Flynn and for very good reasons; it’s simple, it’s quick, it’s super doable, it’s fun, and it’s effective!
I’ve been using The Five Minute Journal for a couple of years and it has been the easiest journal to incorporate into my life.
Starting the day with this journal makes the day begin on the right foot, it starts the day on a positive note, and it gets the day flowing with the beautiful feeling of gratitude.
It literally only takes 2-3 minutes in the morning and 1-2 minutes in the evening just before closing your eyes.
Here’s how The Five Minute Journal works:
Each page begins with an inspirational, motivational, or uplifting quote and from there you will then be prompted to list 3 things you are grateful for, 3 things that would make your day great, and lastly a daily affirmation.
Then as you turn in for the night you simply take a few minutes to list 3 amazing things that happened today and how you could have made it an even better day.
That’s it! A beautiful, simple, and fast way to amplify the things you feel thankful for and in turn amplify your happiness.
